Ist Published Work! Payments for Ecosystem Services for Managing Spring Water Resources

I have had the opportunity to publish one of my group projects on Payments for Ecosystem Services for Managing Spring Water Resources. This is a culmination of a group project wherein we went to the Indian Himalayas for data collection. It feels extremely nice to have been published. A description of the project is attached below.

Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) is an economic conservation tool which has recently gained much attention. It is believed to show a lot of promise in…

Reduced Emissions form Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+)

My masters thesis on Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) wherein I am looking at the history of forest governance in India from a colonial top down perspective to a recent participatory approach to a market based one in the form of REDD+. The government has been keen to implement the REDD+ as it has the potential of providing the Indian government, incentives to the tune of USD 3 billion if utilised well. There are however, some unresolved issues with regards…

Mining in Armenia - II

Two of the main reasons that have come into the forefront for the discrepancies in the evaluation of environmental impacts are corruption and lack of expertise on the subject. Armenia ranks 123rd out of the 178 countries surveyed by Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index. (Denmark ranks No. 1) Another reason is the lack of job oriented education which is imparted out in schools which lays more emphasis on theoritical concepts and neglects the practical applicability of that…

Mining in Armenia

The internship project which I have chosen to work upon is on mining in Armenia. Armenia has seen a host of development initiatives viz-a-viz its mining industry. Probably the most controversial one being the Teghut Copper Molybdenum Mine. The mine has come under continued controversy with regards to the impacts it would have on the environment. Moreover, the kind of information available on the impacts of the mine for example the environment impact assessment is flawed as it has been prepared… Continue

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Even though there has been a long tradition of celebrating Christmas in India, this Christmas seemed to be somewhat different in New Delhi with people coming out in large numbers and joining hands to help those in need. There also seemed to be a lot of enthusiasm amongst  shop owners and business as shops were decorated and spruced up to attract customers going about doing their Christmas shopping. Though I must mention that Christmas has largely come to be associated with consumerism all…

It's time to rethink

Having successfully navigated my way through the NGO jungle to find myself at GIST gives me a sigh of relief by virtue to the kind of work we are doing and the sheer potential of this virtually unexplored idea in the past. It has been only ten days since I joined and have now settled down to get some work done. To begin with I am compiling and facilitating the review of best practices in the area of ecosystem services management all across the globe the results of which can be found at… Continue

Internship at Green India States Trust

After months of whining and despair, I finally managed to find myself an internship in something that is of interest to me. The Green India States Trust is a consultancy NGO that works with economic valuation of natural resources in order to take informed policy decisions. It is a relatively new organisation that has been involved with the study called The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity in trying to mainstream into the current economic system, the… Continue

the future of green economy

The green economy or the invisible economic benefits that we gain from the environment have always been suppressed by the tragedy of the commons and have been put on the back burner. However, the near failure of the brown economy in the form of the food crisis, a collapse in global fisheries, the financial and economic crisis perhaps hint at the subtle fact that perhaps it is time to look back and in retrospect undo some of the blunders that have been committed in the… Continue

Internship Blues

"All's Well that Ends Well", not quiet for me this time as I have spent a lot of energy over the last few months to try and get an internship but without any success. The purpose of the internship was to supplement theoretical knowledge with some hands on work experience and the ride has not been so pleasant so far. I contacted 10-15 organisations in Denmark and India but without much luck. Lets hope the future holds something more exciting for me in this regard....

Discrimination between Danish and English Speaking Students at TekSam, RUC

There was an event organised for the students of TekSam last week (TekSam2.0) but not all could attend the event as it was being held in Danish and not in English. The purpose of the event was to discuss the future of this area of study with former TekSam alumni and offer networking opportunities to the students.…

Copenhagen Youth Goodwill Ambassador Corps

Today I had the opportunity to attend an introduction to the Copenhagen Youth Goodwill Ambassador Corps organised by the Copenhagen Goodwill Ambassador Corps. The youth wing is the sister organisation of the main corps and is formed with the purpose of sharing their experience and life in Denmark in order to promote it as a good investment and study destination. The event was sponsored by Copenhagen Capacity, Confederation of Danish Industry and Wonderful Copenhagen to name a… Continue

Summer School on Renewable Energy

I could not have found a better way to end this year's summer vacation than attending a summer school. This one was special. The Danish California Renewable Energy Programme is a joint venture between Aalborg University and the University of California in the field of renewable energy and takes place in the respective host universities alternatively.

This year, it was in Denmark in collaboration with a host of institutions namely DTU and Riso. It was a healthy mix of work…

Greenland trip!

It has been a while since I returned from Greenland and I have actively been procrastinating to write my blog entry as I know It will be driven with nostalgia. But here I am, trying to overcome the the feeling and writing about something that I am always going to cherish.

It was like nothing i had expected to be. Even though my mind had conjured images of what to expect, it just felt like another world all together. As the Dash 7 roared its engines to take off from…

Kayaking in Roskilde Fjord

Summer time in Denmark can offer a wide range of leisure activities to choose from and Kayaking is just one of them. This time, I had the opportunity to kayak in the Roskilde Fjord with friends. The equipment belongs to a friend of mine who is also an avid adventure lover. Since it was the first Kayaking trip of the season, it took us some time to get the equipment ready before setting sail.

The weather was nice and calm and the water warm and clear. I also took the…

Planning for Greenland Trip

After project hand in, I have started to plan for our trip to Greenland next month. A lot of homework needs to be done. In the same regard, we had a meeting last week with Poul and Thomas (our contact persons for the trip) to discuss details with regards to what to expect and what not to expect. We discussed things like dietary preferences, interests, ideas on how we can best document our ten day trip and so on and so forth. There seems to be a great opportunity to do lots of interesting… Continue

Grounded in New Delhi!!

As luck would have it, just two days before I was to fly back to Denmark after the completion of fieldwork, all flights have been grounded due to the volcanic ash cloud in Iceland. I am trying to get a reschedule or perhaps fly with another airline but there is no clarity as to when will these airlines resume oprations!
