My Study in Denmark

Hello folks,

Finally tomorrow I'll be done with all my courses for my masters; I'll be taking a (well deserved) trip back home for this christmas and then start on the thesis next february.

I think is a good time to describe how thinks are at a Danish university (or at least at DTU) for all the people interested: First of all you have to realize that Danish education is based on reports. This means that even though there are lectures, theory, reading, etc; the way you are expected to learn is by solving real world practical problems. This means that you are definitely going to work hard.

The second aspect is that exams can be either oral (yes, oral for science: today I had a oral exam on turbulence theory) or written (4 hours of brain burning; go to the bathroom before start and take lot's lot's of coffee).

The final aspect is that the grading system is highly not linear: −2 or 0 to fail. 2, 4, 7, 10 or 12 to pass. In practice you only get a −2 if you never go to class (where's the lecture? What time? What is the date today? crap! I forgot my birthday - kind of attitude). Few fail, and the gross majority gets 2-10. It is hard to get a 12, but is not impossible.

Hope this is useful for someone, somewhere any day.
